Have you heard about the Screen Printing Nun? This description somewhat minimises the artist known as Corita Kent, but maybe it has grabbed your attention!
Also known as Sister Mary Corita, she was an American artist, educator and advocate for social justice. Born in 1918, she came to prominence in the 1960's for her vibrant screen prints that reflected her concerns about poverty, racism, and war. She eventually ended up breaking away from the religious order, so she could freely express her views through her print work.
Corita's print work is expressive and bold. She often worked in collage to create her prints, combining newspaper cuttings and found imagery, together with elements created by her own hand. She was head of the art department at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, where she is shown at work in the images below.
